Dr. Mehta was born and raised in Athens, GA, and he is excited to return to his hometown. He values the strong sense of community that Athens nurtures. Dr. Mehta is a board certified Gastroenterologist who specializes in interventional endoscopic therapies for complex esophageal, gastric, intestinal, colonic, liver, and pancreatico-bilary diseases. He performs EGD, Colonoscopy, Endoscopic Myotomy, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography (ERCP), and Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) in order to manage both benign and malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
He started the Endo-Hepatology program at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital where he offered Endoscopic Ultrasound guided liver biopsies and porto-systemic pressure gradient measurement for patients affected by chronic liver disease. He performs the highest volume of these particular procedures in the Southeast and it has led to improved patient outcomes while facilitating their evaluation for liver transplant. During his two years at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, he performed the highest volume of ERCP and EUS procedures in the state.
Dr. Mehta is experienced in the management of patients suffering from gastrointestinal blood loss, difficulty swallowing, liver diseases, bile duct disease, Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis, GI cancers, pancreatic cysts, and chronic pancreatitis. Dr. Mehta also has a special interest in identifying patients at high risk for colon cancer by offering genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes. He performs high quality colon cancer screening for his patients and routinely resects complex colonic polyps to prevent colon cancer.
Dr. Mehta specializes in performing ERCP for the management of both benign biliary diseases such as bile duct stones, bile duct strictures, bile leaks, and malignant bilary diseases such as cholangiocarcinoma. He is the first Gastroenterology at Piedmont to offer bilary radio frequency ablation in the management of cholangiocarcinoma.
He specializes in interventional EUS where he internally drains large pancreatic cysts, performs staging of GI malignancies such as pancreatic cancer, and fiduciary placement to guide radiation therapy in patients suffering from cancer. Dr. Mehta has a unique skill set where he offers non-surgical therapies for patients suffering from complications of bariatric surgery.
He performs endoscopic resection of early esophageal cancer, radio frequency ablation and balloon chemotherapy for the management of Barrett’s esophagus. He performs minimally invasive therapy for patients suffering from Zenger’s Diverticulum. He performs novel endoscopic therapies for patients suffering from complex esophageal strictures due to post surgical anatomy, radiation induced damage, or severe reflux disease.
